A group of enthusiastic collectors begins to discuss ideas for the establishment of a special association for coin and banknote collecting. Ads are put into the country's newspapers to look for individuals who wish to become members of such an association.

Thirty collectors are invited to a special founding meeting at the Nordic House in Reykjavík on January 19th. The Icelandic Numismatic Association (INA) is founded there and then and given its name. Helgi Jónsson is elected first chairman of the board of INA. Subsequently, introductory and exchange meetings are held, and a price list of coins is published.

1970

INA introduces the association to the public by participating in the exhibition We are the Young People. The first auction meeting is held, and INA joins the American Numismatic Association. Membership now totals 150.

INA holds a successful exhibition in the Bogasal of the National Museum of Iceland; the first coin exhibition ever held in Iceland.

1973

Monthly swap meets and regular auctions are held. A foreign lecturer is brought to the country.

Membership now totals 250.

1975

A new logo is introduced. Regular columns about coin collecting and the association's affairs are published in the daily newspaper Morgunblaðið. Anexchange club is set up in a location in the city center. INA holds an exhibition of banknotes and coins at Hagaskóli, in collaboration with The Icelandic Stamp Collectors Federation.

The association's magazine, Mynt, is published for the first time. It contains news of association activities, a variety of information about numismatics, and an auction catalog. Two social meetings are held a month, one a club meeting in Domus Medica and the other an auction meeting in a hall belonging to the I.O.O.F. in Iceland.

Membership now totals 350.

INA’s first commemorative coin is issued on the occasion of the association's 10th anniversary. A birthday exhibition is held in the Bogasalur of the National Museum of Iceland.

1982

INA holds a successful coin exhibition and market in Akureyri in collaboration with the association of stamp collectors there.

1984

INA hosts the meeting of the Nordic Numismatic Union for the first time. The association's 20th anniversary is celebrated with the issue of a commemorative coin.

INA gets new headquarters at the premises of The Icelandic Stamp Collectors Federation at Síðumúla 17 and has had the main base for its operations there ever since.

INA organizes a series of educational meetings, 7-10 per year, for the next several semesters on various topics related to collecting.

INA holds a very successful exhibition in Hafnarborg. The increased interest and large variety of collections of its members are clearly evident there.

INA holds an outstanding exhibition in the hall of the Iceland Touring Association to mark its 50th anniversary. The exhibition receives a lot of media coverage and attention, confirming that INA is a powerful platform for collectors of all kinds in Iceland.

INA holds monthly auction meetings for its members, ten months a year, publishes the Mynt magazine, and holds two collectors' markets a year, open to the public. A new website is launched. Its operation is on a steady course as before, and the association's reach in the world of collectors and collecting in Iceland is wide and welcoming.
